Today marks the 66th anniversary of Maria Montessori’s death in Noordwijk in the Netherlands. Today we remember her as the ‘champion of the child’.
Montessori’s tombstone in cemetery of Noordwijk reads:
I beg the dear all-powerful children to unite with me for the building of peace in man and the world.
The sentiment of her epitaph is clearly depicted in the monument to her life that was unveiled in 2002 Chiaravalle, her place of birth, 50 years after her death.
As we remember Dr. Montessori today, we take inspiration from her words in Education and Peace:
An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual preparation of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.
