Jabulani Rural Health Foundation
Founded in 2007, Jabulani Rural Health Foundation is based in the village of Zithulele in the Mqanduli District of the Eastern Cape. Jabulani is a non-profit organisation that supports Zithulele Hospital and its surrounding community and our vision is to bring hope and positive change by supporting the hospital and partnering with the community in its development and growth. As part of achieving this vision, we invest in quality Early Childhood Development (ECD).
Zithulele Montessori Training Center
With an education coordinator who has a passion for Montessori education on the team, and after investigating the success of two Montessori ECD Centers in our neighboring villages, we decided to adopt the Montessori method of education in two community ECD centers supported by Jabulani – Zithulele ECDC and Khanyisa ECDC. After all, Montessori’s very first Children’s House originated in a rural area. Montessori materials were sourced and adapted to be contextually appropriate. Many of these materials were locally made by community entrepreneurs and volunteers, for example, work mats were woven from grass in true isiXhosa tradition, and many of our Golden Beads were made out of clay.
A training center, in conjunction with Montessori Centre South Africa, was started in February 2017. Six community teachers are currently enrolled and receive onsite weekly lectures and holiday workshops. These teachers in turn, facilitate parent workshops, taking the Montessori Philosophy into the homes.
